Vacancy Description

North East Lincolnshire Council as relevant authority for the North Lincolnshire and Grimsby Area is seeking to appoint a Coroners Officer to support the Coroners Office. During 2016 the Coroner’s Office dealt with 1804 reported death, 205 inquests and 383 post mortems.

You will demonstrate the ability to handle highly sensitive confidential information or emotionally charged situations effectively. Your exceptional communication skills are important. You must have the ability to explain legal and medical terms to non-specialists, and you must be competent in dealing with sensitive situations involving relatives, witnesses, the police and the media.

You will be required to be a continued liaison, as directed, between H M Coroner, Hospital Staff, Consultant Pathologists, General Practitioners, Funeral Directors, Registrars, Families, Solicitors, Police, Government Departments and other Statutory Authorities.

Preparation for Inquests (may include) doing formal identifications with relatives; interviewing and taking antecedent statements from relatives etc; preparing files for Court; running the Court on the day of Inquests and opening an Inquest where considered necessary in accordance with legislation.

You must be prepared, when required, to perform “on-call” duties both out of office hours during weekdays and throughout the weekend (call out allowance payable).
